Interrupting the Game

Dick Lloyd paid the price for wrecking a poker contest.

Dick Lloyd seemed to be attracted to violence. He was involved in troubles in New Mexico and Arizona territories in the 1870s-1880s. After surviving the Lincoln County War (he fought for the House), Lloyd made his way to Cochise County. On March 8, 1881, he drunkenly rode a horse into a saloon in the town of Maxey. He interrupted a poker game featuring some of the Tombstone Cow-boys. Several of them, including John Ringo (photo) and Curly Bill Brocius, opened fire, killing Lloyd instantly. Nobody was ever charged in the shooting.
