Matt Rash came to Colorado’s Brown’s Park in the 1890s to start his own ranch. It ended up costing him his life.
Rash ran afoul of Ora Haley, a stock grower who was trying to drive out the newcomers so he could control the pastureland. When various methods failed, Haley took extreme action—he hired gunman Tom Horn to eliminate some of the small ranchers. Horn killed Rash on July 8, 1900. But that created a new problem. Rash’s fiance’ Ann Bassett spent the next 15 years seeking revenge for the murder—until Haley sold out and left.
