In May of 1889, outlaws attacked the army paymaster, Major Wham (rhymes with bomb) and a Buffalo Soldier escort between Fort Grant and Fort Thomas, Arizona Territory. Although the outlaws got away with the loot, Cpl. Isaiah Mays and Sgt Ben Brown put up a stiff resistance and both received the Medal of Honor for their bravery. For years Mays tried to get an army pension but failed, dying at Phoenix’s Arizona State Hospital in 1925. His burial site was lost and then rediscovered in the 1960s and a proper headstone erected.
