Two Kansas towns vie for county seat status.

January 12, 1889. The Gray County War in Kansas. A group of men from Ingalls–including Bill Tilghman–go to Cimarron. They intend to get the county records and take them to Ingalls, making it the county seat.

A gun battle breaks out at the courthouse. Several of the Ingalls invaders are trapped. Then Bat Masterson wires the Cimarron leaders, threatening to tear the town down if his brother and the others aren’t released. The guns are put down. Several men are wounded and allegedly up to three killed. A court fight decides Ingalls is the county seat.
