A lover’s quarrel brings down Cripple Creek.

April 25, 1896. Dance hall girl Jennie Larue and her boyfriend Otto Floto get into a fight in Cripple Creek, Colorado’s redlight district. Legend says a gas heater is knocked over, starting a fire that ends up destroying most of the downtown area. But there’s no evidence that the tiff was associated with the blaze. As for Otto Floto, he is considered one of the foremost boxing experts in the West. He ends up in a feud with Bat Masterson over fight promotion.
