Ash Upson is best known as the ghost writer for at least part of The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid—ostensibly authored by Pat Garret. The two became fast friends, engaging in a couple of business ventures (which failed). Upson’s health, which was never good, began to fail in the early 1890s. Garrett and his family took Ash in and cared for him.

When Upson died in October 1894, he was penniless and had made no arrangements for his remains. Garrett had Upson’s body buried in a grave Pat had purchased for family, in Uvalde, Texas.
