Ewen Cameron survived the Black Bean Episode, but not for long. A group of Texians had tried to invade Mexico in 1843. They failed and most were captured. Seventeen of them were executed after drawing black beans from a jar (the other 159 pulled white beans). The survivors were taken to Mexico City.
But Cameron had angered Mexican officials for an escape attempt. So they went ahead and shot him on April 26, 1843. He died well—opening his hunting shirt and yelling “Fuego!” (Fire!).
