Sul Ross is renowned in Texas history for his work as a Ranger, Confederate general, Indian fighter, president of what became Texas A&M, and twice elected governor.
Traditionally, he’s also given credit for rescuing Cherokee prisoner Cynthia Ann Parker at the Battle of Pease River in 1860. But that’s been challenged in recent years. Only 15 Cherokee were in camp during the “fight,” and Ross later admitted that he personally had nothing to do with freeing Parker—and that he hadn’t known she was in that camp when he led the attack.
