In May of 1889, outlaws attacked the army paymaster, Major Wham (rhymes with bomb) and a Buffalo Soldier escort between Fort Grant and Fort Thomas, Arizona Territory. Although the outlaws got away with the loot, Cpl. Isaiah Mays and Sgt Ben Brown put up a stiff resistance and both received the Medal of Honor for their bravery.
