It was 1885, and Cow-boys Ike and Phin Clanton were living in Apache County, AZ, raising cattle and goats. On December 27, allegedly, several men robbed the county treasury of more than $11,000. Based on testimony from Deputy Treasurer Francisco Baca, the Clanton boys and three of their friends were arrested.
But at the trial, it was discovered that Baca himself had been embezzling the money. He tried to cover it up by accusing the most noted bad guys in the area. Charges were dismissed against the Clantons and their associates. Baca was tried and convicted.
