Famed defense attorney Clarence Darrow tried to ensure a victory in the 1907 trial of Western Federation of Miners official “Big Bill” Haywood. The defendant was accused of ordering the bombing assassination of former Idaho Governor Frank Steunenberg on December 30, 1905. There was only one witness—the killer, Harry Orchard—against him, so acquittal was practically assured. But it’s believed that Darrow bribed at least one (and maybe more) jurors.
Darrow was charged with bribery in another trial four years later, but one jury acquitted him and one couldn’t reach a verdict.
