Josiah “Doc” Scurlock was a major player in the Lincoln County War. And he was in the region even before, going to work for cattleman John Chisum in the early 1870s.
When John Tunstall was murdered, Scurlock became one of the founders of the Regulators, and after Dick Brewer was killed at the Blazer’s Mill shootout, Doc became leader. He continued to ride with Billy the Kid even after the war ended in 1878.
But Doc turned in his guns in 1879 and moved to Texas, where he became a law-abiding citizen until his death at age 80.
