Eugene Bunch was a gentleman train robber, a former newspaper editor and teacher who turned to crime in 1888. He held up six trains in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi over a four-year period—and passengers described him as soft-spoken and polite.
He always introduced himself to his victims as Capt. J.F. Gerard, tipped his hat to the ladies and refused to take their belongings (he did take men’s money).
He got $20,000 in his last job in August 1892. Detectives tracked him down and killed him in a Louisiana swamp just days later.
