Leander McNelly was one of the great Texas Ranger leaders—but he also made a mark during the Civil War. He was leading a Confederate guerrilla force of about 100, tasked with capturing Brashear City, Louisiana in 1864 (he was 19 at the time). Using the darkness to his advantage, he convinced the Union garrison (800 men) that they faced a much larger force. When light came, he and a few men marched into the town and demanded an unconditional surrender. Union officers immediately complied.
