Nicholas Earp—constable and rum runner.
In 1859, Nicholas Porter Earp—the father of the famed Fighting Earps—was a constable in Monmouth, Illinois. Apparently, he had a business on the side, for he was arrested and convicted of bootlegging. Earp couldn’t pay the fines and ended up losing his farm at auction. Two days later, he moved his family back to Pella, Iowa. But he made frequent trips back to Monmouth—mostly to deal with lawsuits and accusations of tax evasion and misappropriation of funds.
