Cody uses his own story to draw audiences.

December 16, 1872. Scouts of the Prairie takes the stage in Chicago. The show features writer Ned Buntline, Texas Jack Omohundro (and his future wife, Giuseppina Morlacchi)…and the star, Buffalo Bill Cody.

It started rough. Cody was stagestruck and couldn’t remember his lines until he blurted out something about a guy he knew in the audience. The crowd roared, the ice was broken, and the rest of the tour was a success (at least with the public). The next year, Buntline left and Wild Bill Hickok joined up. And, of course, Cody went on to ever bigger and better things.
