Indians are executed in Oregon for perpetrating a massacre.

June 3, 1850. Five Cayuse, including leaders Tiloukaikt and Tomahas, are hanged in Oregon City. Nearly three years earlier, they had participated in the Whitman Massacre in which 14 missionaries were killed.

The massacre resulted from a number of issues–cultural misunderstandings, diseases brought to the Indians, and the Whitman’s practice of setting out poison for keep animals (and Cayuse) away from food.

The massacre led to a war, with American leaders demanding that Indians who participated in the deed surrender–or else. Ultimately, that was done.
