Hired assassin Jim Miller (photo) sometimes sublet his killing contracts. In 1896, he sent John Denson and Bill Earhart to kill Barney Riggs, a noted shootist of his own, in Pecos, Texas. A friend warned Riggs and he was ready for trouble. On March 3, Denson and Earhart entered a saloon where Riggs was substitute bartending. Earhart got off a shot that wounded his target in the arm. Then Riggs pulled his own weapon and proceeded to kill both attackers. Jim Miller never again tried to take out Barney Riggs.
