A number of men had notable last words as they faced the executioner. Augustine Chacon stopped to shake hands with the crowd on the way to the gallows. Finally he waved to his fans, smiled and said, “Too late now. Time to hang.”

George Shears had a sense of humor. Standing on the scaffold he said, “Boys I’m not used to this business. Do I jump off or slide off.”

Black Jack Ketchum is remembered for his bravado. When they put the noose around his neck he said, “Adios” and “I’ll be in hell before breakfast.”
