How some Indian tribes dealt with refuse.

Nomadic tribes moved every few days or weeks as the campsites got too odorous and messy (think about the animal carcasses from meat, skinning, hide-tanning, organ conversions into useful stuff, gluemaking from hooves, food scraps, etc. as well as dozens to hundreds of dogs and horses defecating too). So the nomadic ones simply moved to pristine locations and left their trash and waste behind, hoping the winds, rains, scavengers, and insects would gradually clean it up. Besides, everything was biodegradable.
