The Mormons slaughter immigrants headed to California.
September 11, 1857. Mormon militia and a few Paiute Indians killed about 120 immigrants in southern Utah in what is known as the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The travelers were from Arkansas, for the most part, headed to California. There are several theories as to why the murders occurred. Only one man, John D. Lee, was prosecuted; he was executed by firing squad in 1877.
