The Earps and Holliday face murder charges.

Spicer

October 31, 1881.

Judge Wells Spicer (photo) gaveled to order a preliminary hearing into murder charges against the Earps and Doc Holliday regarding the so-called Gunfight at the OK Corral, which took place five days earlier. The hearing took place in the Mining Exchange, located in the Gird Block on Fremont Street. What should have been a routine procedure, lasting just a few minutes, exploded into what was essentially a full- blown trial. The defendants might have been found guilty–except for the overconfidence of the prosecution and the brilliance of defense attorney Thomas Fitch.
