Billy Brooks was a shootist and enforcer in Kansas in the 1870s.  In early 1873, businessmen in Dodge City hired him as an unofficial lawman—his charge: to put a lid on the violence.  It’s said that he was in 15 gunfights over the course of a few months, leaving up to seven or eight men dead.  Within a couple of months, Brooks had worn out his welcome and left Dodge.  But he was headed to a bad end.  He was lynched at Caldwell, Kansas in July 1874.
