Luke Short stood up to Longhaired Jim Courtright.

February 8, 1887. Two Old West gunhandlers go at it on the streets of Fort Worth.

Jim Courtright (photo) tries to extort protection money from Luke Short, who has the gambling concession at the White Elephant Saloon. Short says no; Courtright goes for his gun. But Short is faster and puts three bullets into his opponent, who dies on the sidewalk. No charges are filed; it’s a case of self-defense.
