What’s in a nickname?
The bawdy houses produced a litany of ladies with colorful sobriquets. Some, like Irish Queen, and Spanish Queen, were related to ethnicity. Rose was a favorite: Prairie Rose, Midnight Rose, Texas Rose, and The Wild Irish Rose. Some nicknames were descriptive: Fickle Flossie, The Waddling Duck, The Roaring Gimlet, and the Little Lost Chicken. Madame Featherlegs acquired her name when she raced a horse down main street wearing only a pair of chaps that flapped in the breeze like feathers. Nellie the Pig was a name pinned on her because she had a cute little turned up nose.
