Being captured didn’t faze train robber Rube Burrow. On October 9, 1890 he was grabbed by two black men, Jesse Hildreth and Frank Marshall, when the bandit showed up at a cabin in Marengo County, AL. Two white planters helped haul Burrow off to jail.
On the trip, Burrow regaled his four captors with jokes and funny stories. He also—half-seriously—offered Hildreth $100 to let him go. Hildreth turned the bribe down, saying Burrow would probably kill him right after paying the money. Burrow died during an escape attempt two months later.
