In the old days (early twentieth century) riders were often hard pressed to know exactly where the Mexican border was and often cowboys wandered back and forth looking for strays. Few people realize Texas John Slaughter’s Arizona ranch also went deep into Sonora and his cowboys rode back and forth on the slightest whim. Hard to believe today.
