Old Dowlin Mill, 2012 true west
Old Dowlin Mill, 2012.

A bit of New Mexico history was lost recently.  The Old Dowlin Mill in Ruidoso was destroyed by a gas explosion and fire.  It was the oldest surviving structure in town, built in 1868 by Paul and Will Dowlin.  It was a grist mill, saw mill, bean thrasher, blacksmith shop, and general store. Legend has it that the Mill was also where locals went to buy their moonshine.

Billy the Kid used to visit the mill, which was the site for community dances and suppers.  Pat Garrett and Geronimo also spent time there.
