The Espinosa family lived in southern Colorado in the 1850s and ‘60s. It’s not clear exactly why, but they declared war against Anglos and Mexicans in the region. In 1862-’63, the gang killed at least 22 people, most in cold blood. They evaded capture—until frontiersman Tom Tobin was tasked with tracking them down.
Accompanied by an army detachment, Tobin caught up with two of the Espinosas. After shooting both, Tobin cut off their heads and took them as trophies to Ft. Garland. The Espinosa’s reign of terror was ended.
