Ben Collins was a respected Indian policeman turned deputy U.S. marshal in Oklahoma Territory in the 1890s. In 1903, he shot and crippled Port Pruitt during an arrest attempt in Emet. Pruitt swore revenge.
Pruitt and his brother hired hit man Jim Miller to take care of things. In 1906, Miller ambushed Collins on a lonely road outside Emet, killing the lawman with two shotgun blasts. Miller was eventually arrested but provided an alibi—he was in a distant location at the time of the shooting (a lie)—and was released.
