Although the Civil War was primarily fought east of the Mississippi River, a number of battles did take place in the West. This is also true of modern-day Civil War
Re-enactments.
On November 6-7, 2004, over 600 Civil War re-enactors met at the Tierra Rejada Ranch in Moorpark, California, about 45 minutes north of Los Angeles, where they re-enacted the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and Appomattox in front of 6,500 spectators. The battles incorporated about 50 horsemen and 15 full-scale artillery field pieces (including two horse-drawn teams), as well as several vintage Union and Confederate cannons.
