The Pen Is Mightier…? Two Tombstone editors nearly had a duel.

It was almost a different kind of Tombstone gunfight.  Sam Purdy, editor of The Epitaph, challenged Independent Editor Patrick Hamilton to a duel based on the latter printing nasty charges against the former.  The two and their seconds went to Sonora, Mexico on September 14, 1882.  But the disagreements continued.  The sides couldn’t decide what weapons to use.  Further arguments ensued.  Finally, the Purdy group went to their carriages and returned to Tombstone, followed soon after by the Hamilton party.  There was no attempt to try again.
