An Interactive Gallery at the C.M. Russell Museum

There are many reasons why Charles M. Russell made Montana his home. At first, it was the chance to experience a rapidly disappearing way of life and the working cowboy culture that pulled him westward. In time, it became the people, their traditions, the storied history and values, and the incomparable landscape that made him stay – ultimately leading to a love for Montana and the American West. As we’ve come to know, this passion was reflected through each and every piece of art he made, highlighting the uniqueness of both the time and the place. And through many of Charlie’s masterworks, one element of western culture stood as true then as it does now – the exclusive role of the horse.

The C.M. Russell Museum, in partnership with the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame, is excited to welcome you to a new and interactive learning space titled, Tales from the Saddle: Come Ride Along. Pairing Charlie’s work alongside life-size photos, storied tales, VR integration, and interactive art displays, this gallery explores the many ways of how the west evolved, yet the horse remained a constant. Unveiled in early February, Tales from the Saddle will continue to transform with future interpretations looking at the cultures, pioneer women, and the changing ways of life in the West.
