What kind of injury did Bill Tilghman suffer during a famous raid?

There are a lot of Old West stories that may or may not be true. One of them regards famed lawman Bill Tilghman. In 1889, he led a group of deputies from Ingalls, Kansas to the neighboring town of Cimarron. The intent: take, by force, the Gray County records, in effect moving the county seat to Cimarron.

Up to three men died and several were hurt. Tilghman reportedly was shot in the leg. But other contemporary accounts say he stumbled in a drainage ditch and sprained his ankle. Which is right?
