A Texas newspaperman learned a hard truth…
William Cowper Brann was a Texas newspaperman who went after his enemies, in print, with relish and tough language. It ended up leading to his demise. In 1897, Brann ran the Waco Daily News; his main target was Baylor University. He printed rumors as well as criticism, angering the college community. A group of students kidnapped him, hoping for retractions which never came. Days later, three men (including a judge) beat Brann.
On April 1, 1898, the parent of a Baylor student shot Brann in the back. The newspaperman returned fire; both men died.
