Lozen was an important figure in the history of her tribe.

Lozen was the younger sister of the great Apache Chief Victorio. But she wasn’t the typical woman. Born around 1840, several warriors sought to marry her; she turned down every one. Instead, she became a warrior, and a great one, carrying out raids against both Mexicans and U.S. citizens/forces. She also became a legendary medicine woman and a prophet. In 1886, when Geronimo laid down his arms, Lozen followed suit. The Apaches were sent to a prisoner of war camp in Florida. Lozen was later moved to a facility in Alabama, where she died of tuberculosis in 1889.
