The birth of an Old West legend.

November 26, 1853. William Barclay (Bat) Masterson is born in Henryville, Quebec. He goes on to a varied career in the American West–lawman, sporting man, buffalo hunter, boxing promoter, journalist, and more. The legends will make him out to be quite the gunfighter–a talent he rarely used, if he had it. And a TV show portrayed him as always carrying a cane, of which there is little or no evidence (except after he was wounded in a shootout).
