Larry McMurtry’s novel, Boone’s Lick, is under negotiation to be directed by Lasse Hallstrom.
The Universal Studios film will be adapted by McMurtry and Diana Ossana (the team also wrote the screen adaptation for Focus Features’ Brokeback Mountain). Julianne Moore will play Mary Margaret Cecil, who is sick of waiting for her husband’s return from a freight-hauling trip. Mary takes her family on a wagon from Boone’s Lick, Missouri, to a Wyoming fort, where she hopes to hunt down her wandering husband. Tom Hanks plays her brother-in-law, Seth, who accompanies the family on the journey and falls in love with Mary.
