This is more than just a biography of a sheriff and his part in taming the West.
Bob Alexander presents a detailed history of the entire region and people of southwestern New Mexico that goes beyond the life of the subject lawman. Although Harvey Whitehill was a noteworthy peace officer in his own right, we are more impressed by the author’s complete coverage of every misdeed ever committed by every bad guy who ever set foot in this last bastion of lawlessness in the country. The obvious extent of research, the many photographs included and the quaintly-worded narration make this a wonderfully entertaining and informative read. —Chuck Lewis
