Frankly, the first time through, I didn’t think it worked. Sure, guitarist Dave Gonzalez is on fire, driving the band wherever he wants it to go. But Chris Gaffney’s world-weary vocals just seemed a little out of place. I changed my mind on the second listen. And by the third, everything worked just fine. These boys are outlaws, going their own way on tracks “She’s Gone” and “Mental Revenge.” Then they toss in the Spaghetti Western instrumental “Saguaro,” and I’m hooked. Give it that second or third listen, and you will be, too. —Mark Boardman
