Carl Sutherland was a nephew to Aurilla Sutherland, the first wife of Wyatt Earp.  But Carl chose a different path, becoming a small time criminal in Missouri, Texas and California.  He really went over the line in 1907, when he shot and killed Los Angeles Police Captain Walter Auble (pictured above) during an attempted arrest.

Sutherland got away—briefly—before a large group of policemen cornered him.  Before they could take him, Sutherland downed a bottle of cyanide and died. Thousands of people viewed his body when it was laid out at the morgue.
