Robert Martin led a double life. In Arizona and New Mexico territories, he was known as an honest and important rancher. In Mexico, he (and pal Curly Bill Brocius) ran a thriving cattle rustling operation in the late 1870s—the source of his ranch livestock.
In November 1880, thieves stole cattle from a couple of Martin’s neighbors and he set out after the miscreants. Martin and the posse managed to retrieve some animals before some of the rustlers ambushed them at Steins Pass. Martin was killed—a rustler killed by rustlers.
