The summer of 1881 was not a good one for Tombstone merchant Frank Carleton.
In June, his restaurant burned to the ground. The next month, he lost his wife—to Frank Diss, the superintendent of the Ice Works. Carleton wasn’t a good loser so he went to the ice factory and put a bullet in Diss—who somehow survived the gut shot.
It’s not clear if Carleton faced legal proceedings.
Diss left town the next March. Carleton stuck around; he became a steward at the Tombstone Hospital. No word on what happened to Mrs. Carleton.
