Auld Lang Syne is a cherished poem by a Scottish poet that is important in the annual holiday of Hogmanay. It’s normally celebrated at midnight, when the poem is sung to remind the family of those left behind and the importance of friendship. But the poem had another use on September 8, 1886, when the Fourth Cavalry Regimental Band was on hand to send Geronimo and the last free Apaches from Bowie Station into exile in Florida. The band played “Auld Lang Syne” to mock Geronimo.
