Wheeler’s great strength as a Western writer is derived from excellent historical research combined with his ability to teach. His Indian characters come alive in this latest tale about Barnaby Skye, an Englishman who makes his home in North America. Married to a Crow Indian woman, Skye saves her life after a murderous raid on their camp by a Blackfoot war party. Skye must defend the helpless woman, who is near death, while battling winter storms as well as two- and four-legged killers on the prowl. Adding to Skye’s trouble are whiskey peddlers trading deadly, strychnine-laced brew to the Indians who can’t resist temptation. Wheeler fans will enjoy this fast-paced adventure.—Phyllis Morreale-de la Garza
