After being captured at Stinking Springs, Billy the Kid and his gang were taken to Fort Sumner, New Mexico where Billy was allowed to say goodbye to his girlfriend Paulita Maxwell, while her mother scowled at the posse. One of the posse members, James East, later recalled, “The lovers embraced, and she gave Billy one of those soul kisses the novelists tell us about, till it being time to hit the road for Vegas, we had to pull them apart, much against our wishes, for you know, all the world loves a lover.” It was a Christmas Eve smooch, as the date was December 24, 1880.
