The Boss With The High Forehead

In 1874 a young New Yorker, John P. Clum, 22, accepted a difficult assignment, to be the Indian Agent for the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona Territory. He did so with some distinction, establishing an Indian Tribal Police, a Tribal Court and forming a system of Indian self-rule. He even arrested Geronimo. The Apaches called him Nantan Betunnykahyeh, which means the “Boss With the High Forehead” based on his tall
and balding noggin’.
