The James-Younger Gang was trying to rob the First National Bank in Northfield, MN on September 7, 1876. As we know, they were shot to pieces—in part by medical student Henry Wheeler.
The 23-year-old grabbed a Smith carbine in the Dampier House hotel, went to the 3rd floor and opened up. His shots killed Clell Miller and wounded Bob Younger.
Wheeler kept the rifle (and got a watch from the First National Bank). This week—June 16—the gun and the watch go on display at the Northfield Historical Society, located in the bank building that the outlaws tried to rob.
