Butch Cassidy was tired of the outlaw trail. So in 1899, he tried to cut a deal to gain his freedom.
The details are cloudy, but it appears that he approached the governor of Utah and officials of the Union Pacific railroad. All seemed interested in working something out, but they needed assurances.
One story says Butch was supposed to meet UP leaders in October 1899, but they were delayed by weather and Cassidy angrily left before they got there. Nothing came of it—Wild Bunch robberies over the next year or so squelched any amnesty chance.
