Tom Jeffords is best known as an Indian agent in Arizona Territory—and for his close relationship with Apache Chief Cochise. In fact, Jeffords was with Cochise during the chief’s final illness in July 1874. Before dying, Cochise told him that he believed they would see each other again in the afterlife.
Jeffords was not allowed to attend Cochise’s funeral; it was for Apaches only. But he did know the location of the chief’s grave—a secret he never divulged before his own death in 1914.
